In order to secure and confirm a burial plot/hole the following has to be provided:
Historic documents indicate that the land was provided to the Muslim Community by the
then-colonial Government in 1848.
It was the 1st first burial ground for Muslims living in the Wynberg area.
Imam Badrodien, being the “Malay Priest”, as he was termed, for the Wynberg area during this period was entrusted with the oversight of the cemetery on behalf of the Wynberg Muslim Community.
Over time and with Yusufeyyah Masjid’s establishment in 1867, the Masjid
took over the custodianship of the Brodie Road Cemetery. In 1896 the last burial took place.
After 127 years later , and in welcoming news for the Muslim Community of the Cape, permission by the city of Cape Town was granted to the Yusufeyyah Masjid Committee to re-commission the cemetery.
On Friday 7 April 2023 the cemetery was re-opened, and the first burial took place the following morning.
NO walls or strutures may be built around any grave.
NO pre-booking or reservation of burial spaces allowed.
Only standard size headstones will be permitted.
